Philippine National Police (PPNP) officers were yesterday on the sidelines of a preliminary examination of a drug shortage, the Ministry of Health has revealed.
The investigation into the shortage of the drugs will be carried out at the PNP office in the city of Davao.
The PNP said that it had not had any reports of the shortage for a long time.
“The report of the shortage was received from the Department of Health and Social Welfare (DHSSW) and it confirmed the existence of the drug shortage and will be sent to the PNP to be submitted to the DHSSW for investigation and confirmation. We are therefore conducting an investigation to gather evidence to back up the case,” the department said in a statement.
The PNP also said it had been involved in the investigation of the shortage of Viagra and Cialis.
PNP officers and medical representatives said that the shortage of the drugs was due to the fact that the manufacturers were under threat of losing their patents.
The medicines in the medicine cabinet were only available by prescription. The drugs could only be supplied by pharmacies in the Philippine Drug and Poisons Board (PDPB), or by pharmacies in other countries.
Davao said that the Ministry of Health had notified the PPNP in December 2014, which had already received an order to report the drug shortage. The drugs were to be used only by those with a valid prescription from their manufacturer.
“The PDPB has confirmed that the drug shortage is an issue of the Ministry of Health,” the PNP said.
Davao said that the drug was not available by prescription in the public sector and the PPNP would be working with its doctors to get the drugs back on the market. However, the PPNP would also be working with its doctors to get the drugs back on the market.
In the meantime, the PNP will also be conducting an investigation on the issue of counterfeit drugs.
“The investigation is currently ongoing, and we will conduct an investigation into this issue. The PPNP will be conducting an investigation into the problem of counterfeit drugs,” the department said in a statement.
